In the fall of 2015 the SGBA offered a series of Producer Symposiums around the province. These were done in co-operation with the Government of Saskatchewan Agriculture, and the University of Saskatchewan – Western College of Veterinary Medicine. These symposiums were held in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Weyburn, Swift Current, Yorkton, and Regina. Each was well attended and the feedback from attendees was very positive.
The symposiums provided the additional opportunity for producers to gather information on current and upcoming government programs such as traceability and the Premise ID program, as well as gain valuable, firsthand knowledge, from the volunteer veterinarians.
Our volunteer vets discussed parasite loads and controls, common diseases and nutrition, as well as answering specific questions from the attendees. A nice snack of goat products was provided in the middle of the day to break up the discussion section and the hands on section, giving everyone an opportunity to meet other producers and share ideas.
The hands on sessions were of value to all participants, experienced producers, and new goat owners alike, enabling everyone to put the ideas and concepts from books and resources into practice. Valuable information on testing for body condition, injection sites, and hoof structure and trimming was shared. This day also offered an opportunity for our young, up and coming producers, to try out some new skills and gain confidence!
